What is an air source heat pump?
It's a unit that sits outside your home and pulls heat out of the air, even on cold days, then pumps it into your radiators and hot water cylinder. It runs on electricity, but for every unit it uses it delivers three to four units of heat. That's why it can replace a gas, oil or LPG boiler and cost less to run.
Pair it with solar panels and much of the electricity it needs during the day comes from your own roof.
How the £7,500 grant works
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant, not a loan, so there's nothing to pay back. It's paid through your installer, which means we apply for it and it's deducted from your quote before you pay anything.
You're likely to qualify if you
- Own the property (your home, a second home or a home you let out)
- Live in England or Wales
- Are replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric heating
The grant can't be used
- To replace an existing heat pump or other low carbon heating
- For social housing
- On a home that has already had government funding for a heat pump
- For a hybrid heat pump system

Is my home suitable?
Most homes are. The survey confirms it, and some homes need extra insulation or a few larger radiators first. You'll need:
- Outside space: roughly 2m x 1m of ground for the outdoor unit, with room for air to flow in front of it.
- A hot water cylinder: or space for one. It can often go where a combi boiler is now, in a large cupboard or the garage.
- Reasonable insulation: loft and cavity wall insulation help the heat pump run efficiently.
