If you have a Tesla Powerwall 2, open the Tesla app and check for a notification. On 28 September 2026 the UK Government published a product safety report saying the Powerwall 2 presents a risk of fire. You aren't in any immediate danger, and Tesla is replacing affected units free of charge.
What has happened?
The report comes from the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). It says battery cells inside affected units can develop internal defects over time. The cells were made by a third party and may contain excessive lithium plating, which can crack the cell casing. That can lead to an internal short circuit and, in the worst case, thermal runaway.
Tesla has remotely discharged most of the affected Powerwall 2 units and is discharging the rest. If your battery has stopped charging or discharging, that's why.
The report doesn't give serial numbers, manufacture dates or how many units are affected in the UK, so the only way to know if yours is included is the notification in your Tesla app.
Am I in danger?
No, not immediately. Discharging the batteries remotely is the safety measure Tesla has taken while replacements are arranged.
What should I do?
Three things, in this order.
- Keep the Powerwall connected to the internet, so Tesla can finish discharging it if it hasn't already
- Check the Tesla app for a notice telling you whether your unit is affected
- Contact your installer to arrange removal and replacement, or ring Tesla Support on +44 1628 450630 if you can't reach them
Tesla is working with its Certified Installers on removal and replacement, so expect a wait while they work through their customers. The replacement itself costs you nothing.
